Spring 2008 began like any other day, filled with the usual activities of prom season—spending the afternoon visiting boutiques helping my teenage daughter find the perfect formal. Little did I know that by day's end, I would receive a phone call that would destroy my foundation, shatter my seemingly perfect life, and forever alter its course. That call marked the beginning of a decade-long journey, one filled with confronting my deepest fears and desperately grasping at any bit of past-life normalcy.
You see, for over 20 years, my brilliant, successful husband, who had provided us with a lovely life, had secretly been wrestling with an addiction. That phone call was the devastating revelation of his struggles. What I discovered next would challenge everything I thought I knew about our life together and lead us all down a path I never could have imagined...
Looking back on the trials and tribulations, I realized my journey was not just a story of survival. I discovered an inner strength and resilience I didn’t know existed. I found I was able to leverage adversity to build a greater sense of resilience and strength, transforming my life in ways I never thought possible and uncovering potential I had never imagined. Driven by a desire to use my journey to help offer hope to others, I began to contemplate what it was within me that enabled me to not just survive but, in some ways, truly thrive in the midst of such a battle. I identified a few innate qualities that were key to my perseverance and growth: unwavering determination, faith in the future, and an inherent sense of optimism. My determination stemmed from knowing my 'why'—the commitment to do whatever was necessary to keep my family together. My faith in the future is rooted in the belief that God always works for my good, and my optimism was grounded in my ability to find gratitude even in difficult times.

It became clear that my gratitude practice was a key factor in my ability to navigate challenges. A practice I had started 10 years prior to that fateful call allowed me to find light in the darkest moments and appreciate the growth that came from each challenge. Personally experiencing the impacts of this simple yet powerful practice, combined with my desire to offer support and encourage others, led me to create a gratitude journal, 365 Days of Gratitude: A Guided Journal for Joy-filled Living.
